The materiality and density of Orchard's work is viscerally powerful. It transcends both the literal messages it carries and the media that give it form. Each drawing is a snapshot, fleeting moment in a train of thought. In Orchard's hands, each drawing is also a dynamic entity, changing and metamorphosing like the individual and moving towards a final confrontation.
After his work was surveyed in a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1976, Christopher Orchard moved to London where he worked alongside with Paula Rego. Founding member of Central Studios inc. in Adelaide SA. in 1981, Orchard is now Head of Drawing at Adelaide Central School of Art and active supporter of professional development for young artists. His drawing and works on paper are the major areas of his studio practise, with a background of sculptural installation during the 1970s. To this date, he has held 23 solo exhibitions.
