ABOUT THE ARTIST
Deborah Sleeman lives on the remote island of Kangaroo Island off South Australia. As a sculptor and committed environmentalist, Sleeman is drawn to old and discarded refuse for her materials. Her work has seen innovative recycling of marine litter, corrugated iron, timber and steel.
The tin dress sculptures contain hand-made glass portals that quietly glow. The artist explains, “the portals are gateways, invitations to reflect on the spirit of and connections between things both animate and inanimate. The pressed tin conveys timelines, place and the elemental”.
Sleeman has created numerous public sculptures including a commission for the Holdfast Bay City Council and the Council of Kangaroo Island.
