Junko’s works are delicate and light, fuelled by the intense jottings and dashes of an artist refined in the manipulation of mark making and soft delicate colour. What we are seeing is a type of fourth dimension, where creativity has united with the practical to explore a realm of honest beauty. An amalgamation of hand and brush striking in a controlled experienced manner across the canvas.
- Malcom Bywaters, 2008
In 1992 Junko migrated from Japan to Australia and later settled in Tasmania. She has since been searching for her personal identity-redefining her cultural identity and developing new perspectives. Her painting acts as a sort of journal from which she is able to formulate a sense of her own identity and communicate personal observations about life. In recent works, her focus is to create images which are strong and soft, bold and precise, beautiful and ugly, figurative and abstract, all at the same time. Her use of the meandering line and naïve, almost child-like figurative style give her work a subtle humour and optimism. The works provoke thought, quiet reflection and an awareness of the human condition. Over the past two decades Junko has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Australia and Japan. She was the winner of several awards and also a finalist in several award exhibitions. Junko’s work is part of private and public collections in Australia, USA and Japan.
