ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ross Tamlin has aptly titled his latest series of paintings ‘Eclectic’. Themes range from iconic Sydney suburb names on sheets of rusted corrugated iron to ghostly ships stranded on calm, deserted beaches. Tamlin says this diverse mix of subject matter has been derived from the places he has lived and worked over the years and the feelings of nostalgia associated with these experiences.
In his signature pieces, Tamlin creates a remarkable visual illusion whereby layers of carefully applied oil paint overlaid with varnish appear to be three dimensional sheets of weathered corrugated iron, haphazardly nailed together. In reality, the paintings have a highly polished, smooth, glossy surface.
Other works in the exhibition include colossal, multicoloured cargo containers set against a surreal sky and a rendition of the ‘Flying Scotsman’.
