The meaning of the ancient Greek word Mimesis is the re-presentation of reality. For Paul Haggith, painting involves a process of deconstruction and reconstruction. There is a filtering process, re-presenting or translating what is before him.
As a coastal resident and surfer, his affinity with the ocean is palpable. Haggith shows us the subtle motion of the ocean, the flickering sunlight, and glimpses of a sandy ocean floor. In this inviting ocean world, children frolic and boogie boarders float idly.
The exhibition is punctuated by colourful retro buildings. Like the seascapes, these architectural paintings are bathed in the warm glow of summer. Haggith’s vision is of the eternal golden summer, a comforting vision of Australia as our lives become increasingly demanding and fast paced.
